Nutrition Habits to Last a Lifetime
We all want our kids to do well in school, flourish in their extracurricular activities,
and go on to lead a happy, healthy, successful life. With the rise in health problems
such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, what greater
gift can we give to our kids than the gift of health?
We certainly wouldn’t do anything to hold our kids back, so why would we feed them
processed, high fat, high sodium junk to slow them down? A healthy lifestyle has
never been so easy, and the habits we instill in our children now will last forever.
Packing lunches for school has become much less of an effort with the invention
of things like prepackaged baby carrots, and pre-sliced apples. There can be no
more complaining that “I couldn’t bite my apple” because they are already sliced
for you! What more can we ask for?
Healthy eating also goes beyond the snacks we pack. It starts the minute we get
up in the morning. We have often heard from dieticians that breakfast is the most
important meal of the day. Now, we have to ask ourselves, do we let them eat that
bowl of high sugar cereal before running off to school? Or is there a better alternative?
I DO understand that my kids REALLY want to eat that high sugar stuff, and you know
what? I LET THEM! But not on a school day, and certainly not every day. Remember
I said that moderation was the key.
We all know that in order to do well in school, kids need to start their day off
on the right foot. I believe my children’s education is as important as any career.
Their minds and bodies flourish with the right kinds of fuel to help them along.
If I feed my girls a high sugar cereal for breakfast I can bet by the time they
get to school, their energy levels are starting to fall. If they eat a whole grain
cereal, or wholegrain toast with an egg or a piece of fruit or juice in the morning,
I am certain they have the best start to their day that I can give them.
Eating right is something that I am very passionate about and something my kids
are being forced to learn as they grow. I take to heart the importance of keeping
their bodies fuelled with the right kind of energy to get them through their day.
Like I said, we also indulge in our favorite foods. Moderation is the key and nutrition
education is paramount! When the girls get hungry I love watching them reach for
an apple instead of a fruit rollup (the dentist thanks us too!)
